The Little Mermaid is a 2023 film that; was released on May 8, 2023.

Synopsis[]

A young and spirited mermaid princess, named Ariel; who has a thirst for adventure, is longing to find out more about the world beyond the sea, Ariel visits the surface and falls in love; with a dashing human prince, named Eric. Following her heart, she makes a deal; with the evil sea witch, Ursula to experience life on the land.

Plot[]

Ariel is a teenage mermaid; with an insatiable curiosity for human culture and the surface world; despite the fact that; she has never see it, as her father, Triton; who is the ruler of the merpeople of Atlantica, has forbidden all other merpeople in general from visiting the surface; after Ariel's mother, Athena was killed; by a human. Ariel finds solace in the human objects that; she finds lost at sea in shipwrecks, ruins or cast overboard from passing ships; with the support of her friends, Flounder and Scuttle.

After noticing that; Ariel was missing from the Coral Moon meeting; which she was meant to attend with her sisters, Mala, Indira, Caspia, Tamika, Karina and Perla simultaneously, Triton scolds Ariel, later that; night, Ariel sees fireworks above her grotto and decides to investigate; by going to the surface, the fireworks are coming from a ship that; belonged to Eric; who is the prince of the caribbean island of Sardinia.

Ariel eavesdrops on a conversation between Eric and the prime minister, Grim about the former's desire to travel the world and help the people of his kingdom, a storm strikes at sea and the crew head for the lifeboats as their ship is damaged, Eric is tossed overboard and almost drowns underwater; but Ariel saves Eric from drowning, bringing him to shore and utilizes her siren voice; in order to revive him, as Eric regains consciousness, Ariel flees from sight. After Eric is home and safe, his adoptive mother, Selina forbids him from sailing again.

Ariel's absent-minded behavior is commented on; by her sisters, Mala, Indira, Caspia, Tamika, Karina and Perla simultaneously, Triton then questions his advisor, Horatio Sebastian; regarding if his youngest daughter is in love; who out of panic, accidentally reveals that; Ariel had visited the surface and saved a human from drowning, Triton is enraged and confronts Ariel in her grotto; when she refuses to stop visiting the surface world, he destroys her collection of treasures, as Ariel tries to stop him, Triton also destroys the statue of Eric.

After Triton leaves, Ariel is left sobbing, two electric eels, Flotsam and Jetsam arrive at the grotto; who were sent; by Triton's estranged sister and Ariel's aunt, the sea witch, Ursula; who was banished from Atlantica 15 years ago, offers to help her.

Ariel travels to Ursula's lair, where the sea witch strikes a bargain; with her, she states that; she could transform Ariel; into a human for 3 days, in; which time she must receive true love's kiss from Eric, if she succeeds, she will remain human forever; but if she fails, she would transform back; into a mermaid and would belong to Ursula; but the deal comes; with a price; Ariel would have to sacrifice her power to breathe underwater, her tail and her siren voice; which Ursula would store inside a nautilus shell, Ariel reluctantly accepts the terms of the deal, and her tail and fins are transformed; into legs and feet.

Ariel swims to the surface, where a fisherman takes her back to Eric's castle, Eric; who has been searching for the woman; who had saved his life, rushes to meet Ariel; when he hears of her arrival, Ariel is excited; but her lack of voice turns the prince away. That; day, Ariel explores the castle and discovers Eric's collection of items from his travels, and she and the prince pore over the collection together, throughout the entire day and most of the evening.

Back at Atlantica, Triton has the kingdom, as well as his other daughters, Mala, Indira, Caspia, Tamika, Karina and Perla simultaneously, search for Ariel, as she has gone missing and he now regrets his actions; regarding the way he had treated his youngest daughter.

The next day, Ariel and Eric explore the kingdom; Sebastian (secretly) acconpanies them after he had discovered that; Ursula has rigged the deal to; make Ariel forget that; she has to gain a kiss from Eric, Sebastian, Scuttle and Flounder take it upon themselves to get the pair to kiss and are almost successful; but Ursula sends Flotsam and Jetsam to thwart their efforts, enraged; by the close call, Ursula transforms herself; into a beautiful young woman, calling herself Vanessa and places a spell on Ariel's siren voice; in order to hypnotize Eric.

The next morning, Ariel and her friends discover that; Eric will be announcing his engagement to Ursula as Vanessa. Scuttle discovers that; Vanessa is in fact Ursula in disguise and informs Ariel of this; who rushes to the engagement party, breaking the nautilus shell, restoring her voice and breaking Eric's enchantment, Eric finds out that; Ariel is the woman he has be searching for the entire time. Ursula warns Eric to leave Ariel and; before the two can kiss, the sun sets and Ariel transforms back; into a mermaid. While reverting to her original form, Ursula grabs Ariel and grags her back; into the sea.

Triton confronts Ursula and orders her to release Ariel; but Ursula informs Triton that; the deal Ariel had; made is unbreakable, Triton saves Ariel; by taking her place, handing his trident to Ursula, while Flotsam and Jetsam release Ariel and disintegrate Triton; into dust, Ursula steals Triton's crown, the trident of atlantica and declares herself the new ruler of Atlantica, witnessing the incident, Ariel confronts Ursula and attempts to attack her; but is quickly overpowered.

Ursula attempts to destroy Ariel; but Eric arrives and saves Ariel, managing to hit Ursula; with an harpoon, furiously, Ursula orders Flotsam and Jetsam to capture Eric, in the skirmish, Ursula nearly kills Eric; but Ariel intervenes and redirects her attack; instead, Ursula accidentally kills Flotsam and Jetsam; in the process. As Ariel hurries to join Eric, Ursula mourns the deaths of her pet electric eels, Flotsam and Jetsam.

In a fit of rage, Ursula uses the trident to transform herself; into a giant sea monster, creating a thunderstorm to threaten Ariel and Eric, one of the ships from the shipwreck is brought to the surface; during this storm, Ursula attempts to use the trident to kill Eric; but fails, after Ariel pulls herself onto the ship, she succeeds in killing Ursula; with it's bowsprit.

Upon Ursula's demise, the trident she leaves behind sinks to the ocean floor and upon contact restores Triton back to life, Ariel picks up the trident and hands it back to Triton, both Triton and Ariel acknowledge each other's sacrifice. Eric returns home, where Selina accepts that; his love for Ariel is genuine.

Triton ultimately accepts that; although Ariel is home, she will not be happy; without Eric, on Sebastian's advice, he permanently transforms Ariel; into a human. After Ariel and Eric are happily reunited, and get married, the two decide to travel the world together for their honeymoon; with the support of their respective families, as well as the people of both the land and underwater worlds.
